ABSTRACT

Background: Worldwide, more than 1.2 billion population is adolescents. Nutrition, physical activity, psychological health, and sanitations are few areas that affect adolescents, making them more vulnerable to diseases and contributing in disease burden. The present study was part of the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) school based health program Mission SHAKTTI which focused, and reported on adolescents’ awareness and health literacy about nutrition, physical activity, and sanitation in Delhi. Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted with students (aged 11-19 years), and the Mission SHAKTTI program was devised using the pillars of Gandhi’s teachings for good health. Data were collected using a pre-tested open ended questionnaire (n=1796). For data analysis, deductive approach was adopted, and thematic content analysis was done with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: The study showed that students were somewhat aware of various health-related issues pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology of health, with 49.5% (CI: 46.72-51.39) reported that Gandhiji’s mantra for staying healthy was simply a clean environment and proper sanitation. A gap between their understanding and perceptions of a balanced diet was observed, since many felt that merely eating enough food could labelled as balanced diet (36.46%; CI: 34.24-38.74). Conclusions: Findings may be useful in developing a suitable health-based educational program to inculcate knowledge about healthy practices among school-aged children through Gandhian health ideology. This may also help in forging a stronger and more aware foundation of nation leading to prevention of numerous diseases in the near future.

ABSTRACT

Background: Unstable angina constitutes a clinical syndrome that is usually caused by atherosclerotic coronary artery disease and is associated with an increased risk of cardiac death and myocardial infarction. Material and Methods: An open, prospective, observational, comparative study was conducted. The study included 50 cases in age group 20-80 years admitted in Government Medical College, Amritsar diagnosed as unstable angina ruled out by Trop T and CPK-MB at admission. Hs-CRP and Fibrinogen levels were estimated at time of admission and repeated after 48 hours. Results: There was significant difference in the mean value of Hs-CRP between favourable and unfavourable group at the time of admission (0.807±0.37mg/l v/s 3.57±1.70mg/l, p<0.001). A significant difference in the mean value of Hs-CRP was found between favourable and unfavourable group after 48 hours (0.51±0.22mg/l v/s 4.03±1.84mg/l, p<0.001) There was significant difference in the mean value of fibrinogen between favourable and unfavourable group at the time of admission (356.94±72.50mg/dl v/s 588.60±94.89mg/dl, p<0.001). A significant difference in the mean value of fibrinogen was found between favourable and unfavourable group after 48 hours (309.11±75.25mg/dl v/s 622.60±133.42mg/dl, p<0.001). Conclusion: It is concluded that in patients with unstable angina, elevated levels of Hs-CRP and Fibrinogen at admission indicate an adverse hospital outcome.

ABSTRACT

Cadmium (200 ppm) applied through the rooting medium to 30-day-old wheat plants decreased chlorophyll content, net CO2 exchanges and PSII activity by 34, 54 and 43% respectively. Thylakoid total lipids, total glycolipids, total phospholipids and total neutral lipids decreased by 22, 23, 12 and 25%, respectively, under cadmium treatment. Thylakoid membrane glycolipids had three major constituents, viz. monogalactosyl diacylglycerol, digalactosyl diacylglycerol and sulphoquinovosyl diacylglycerol. Monogalactosyl diacylglycerol and digalactosyl diacylglycerol contents decreased by 32 and 27%, respectively, under cadmium. Cadmium application also decreased the concentration of phosphatidyl glycerol and phosphatidyl choline to the extent of about 57 and 31%, respectively. On the other hand, phosphatidic acid and free fatty acids content showed an increase. These compositional changes in thylakoid membranes might be responsible for reduced PSII activity and rate of photosynthesis as observed under cadmium treatment.
